This position is responsible for coaching student-athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for competitive success, while fostering a positive and growth-oriented team culture. The coach will inspire student-athletes to develop not only their basketball skills but also life skills such as work ethic, goal setting, perseverance, and teamwork. A key focus of this role is preparing student-athletes for opportunities to compete at the collegiate level. Our program places a strong emphasis on academic excellence, character development, and community pride.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organize and lead team meetings for prospective players; actively recruit and encourage student participation.

  • Assess player skills and design development plans to help each athlete improve both individually and as a team.

  • Develop and implement a regular practice schedule, ensuring focus on both fundamental skill development and team strategies.

  • Collaborate with the Athletic Director to schedule gym time, practices, and games.

  • Supervise and direct assistant coaches to maximize program effectiveness.

  • Instruct players on game rules, techniques, and equipment use while emphasizing sportsmanship and teamwork.

  • Observe athletes during practices and games to identify areas for improvement and adjust coaching strategies as needed.

  • Create and implement game strategies based on the team’s strengths and opponent analysis.

  • Maintain high standards for student behavior and provide proper supervision of student-athletes at all times — including practices, games, and team travel.

  • Monitor and support student-athlete academic progress to ensure eligibility and promote academic success.

  • Follow district and state procedures for handling player injuries and communicating with the athletic trainer.

  • Build positive relationships with parents and guardians by providing updates on player progress and team events.

  • Ensure compliance with all Millwood Public Schools, OSSAA, and GMAC conference regulations.

  • Represent Millwood Girls Basketball with professionalism in all interactions with students, officials, fans, and media.

  • Submit timely post-game reports highlighting team results, player highlights, and notable performances.

  • Manage equipment inventory, coordinate uniform distribution, and request necessary supplies.

  • Collaborate with the Athletic Director to develop award criteria and coordinate end-of-season awards.

  • Plan and participate in team events such as parent nights, senior nights, banquets, and fundraisers.

  • Maintain accurate records including eligibility forms, emergency contacts, player insurance, and equipment inventory.

  • Promote inclusivity and model non-discriminatory practices in all team-related activities.

  • Provides guidance, mentorship, and exposure opportunities to student-athletes who aspire to compete at the collegiate level, including assisting with recruitment processes, communicating with college coaches, creating highlight films, and advising players and families on academic and athletic requirements for college eligibility.

Other Duties:

  • Attend required staff meetings, coaching clinics, and professional development opportunities to enhance coaching knowledge and techniques.

  • Obtain and maintain CPR, NFHS and state certifications.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director, or district leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Previous experience as a head or assistant basketball coach at the high school or college level is preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of basketball rules, strategies, and skill development techniques.

  • Effective leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to build positive relationships with student-athletes, parents, school staff, and community members.

  • Ability to effectively and efficiently communicate with administration.

  • Commitment to the academic and personal development of student-athletes.

Certification Requirement:

  • Current CPR certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start date).

  • NFHS certification

  • Care and Prevention certification
