As a Reading Tutor, your crucial role will impact the lives of many children, offering vital assistance to those who need extra help reading at their grade-level. Immerse yourself in a local school, supporting kindergarten through third-grade students with one-on-one or paired guidance to enrich their reading skills. Your commitment during school hours for the entire academic year ensures a profound impact.

With training and on-site coaching, you'll be equipped to help children thrive. Join our AmeriCorps team on a mission to empower children through reading for lifelong success! We're actively seeking tutors for the 2024-25 school year. Unleash your passion – become a reading tutor and be the difference! This position will be at Freedom Elementary School in the Freedom Area School District (25-28 hours a day/ 5 days a week)

How You’ll Take Action

• Be a caring adult that provides support to help students build their skills and confidence
• Track student progress and regularly meet with the school’s on-site coach
• Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data software.
• Commit to your own growth as a tutor through coaching, training, and professional development.
• Represent Reading Corps at school events and share your experience with the community to raise awareness.

It Starts with a Passion

Reading Corps takes everyday people and trains them to be great tutors. Anyone can become a tutor as long as they have a passion to make a difference – and meet the following minimum qualifications.

By the time they begin their service, our tutors are:

• • Dependable and have a history of good attendance
  • Able to understand and follow instructions
  • Open to making improvements based on feedback
  • Capable of setting a pace and maintaining a schedule with students
  • Competent with basic computer skills (like email and navigating online)
  • Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing
  • 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent
  • A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States*
  • Able to successfully complete a background check
