Job Description
The Chapel Art Center at Saint Anselm College is seeking an energetic and creative gallery assistant, to help coordinate exhibitions and their collateral materials, special programs, and public events. The position requires someone who is capable in a supervisory role, to plan, organize, and participate fully in the daily life of the gallery. The assistant is a key figure in helping to grow this historically significant and emergent institution, purposefully integrated within a strongly academic, liberal arts learning environment.
The gallery assistant can expect to function in these capacities: hire and manage the student gallery attendants and assist in supervising their work; manage the flow of exhibition tasks, time lines, notifications and correspondence; arrange receptions and special functions; arrange travel; schedule meetings; purchase materials and equipment; assist in collections management records for acquisitions and related collections materials and equipment; assist in the management of the physical plant; assist in management of budget expenditures and special funds. The gallery assistant works closely with the director in his schedule, assisting his relationship with donors and professional constituencies.
These duties require a good working relationship with on-campus colleagues, coordinating departments (e.g., the Fine Arts department, Physical Plant, Communications and Marketing), students, and contracted service staff on and off campus. Required:
At least an Associates degree, plus 3-5 years of relevant experience or a combination of education and experience. Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office including Word, Excel and Outlook, and proficiency maintaining database systems. Must be a self-starter with strong attention to detail; excellent multi-tasking, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills required, along with ability to work independently and in a team environment. Good proofreading, spelling/grammar and general writing and math skills also required. Must be able to handle information related to donations, maintaining confidentiality. Some evening and weekends required during exhibitions and events. Some lifting of preparation materials, catalogs, and supplies; drop off and pick up of materials and supplies.
Preferred:
Knowledge of art history; experience in gallery or museum work (an appreciation for and sensitivity to art handling and exhibition); experience with event planning or hospitality. Basic proficiency with or willingness to learn design software such as Adobe Creative Suite or Canva.
This position is scheduled for Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during the academic year (August-May).
