CIS is a community-based organization, founded in 1986 with a mission to bring quality counseling to students and their families in New York City Public Schools. The philosophy of CIS is to identify, develop, and reinforce the strengths and resilience inherent in everyone. We work from a multiple perspective approach, assessing each child's developmental, social, emotional, and cultural viewpoint. All our programs serve to support the development of each child so they may experience academic success on their way to becoming more productive members of their communities.
Location: Middle School located in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn NY 11216 Position Summary: The Education and Leadership Specialist is responsible for providing guidance and assistance in several facets reviewing lesson plans submitted by Activity Specialists, coaching, and instructional support.
Duties and Responsibilities: - Provides guidance in development of curriculum.
- Assists in identifying and acquiring lesson resources.
- Observes and coaches Activity Specialist professionals in establishing best practices.
- Collaborates with Director and school administration to identify appropriate themes and
- objectives for educational content.
- Aids staff in planning, writing and implementing high-quality, content-rich lessons.
- Must have a strong interest in working with youth and have expertise in area(s) of specialty.
- Provide guidance and inspiration to help students approach area(s) of specialty with enthusiasm and confidence.
- Responsible for developing weekly project based learning activity plans in area(s) of specialty.
- Facilitate activities that foster the development of new skills in children.
- Ensure that age-appropriate activities are implemented for youth in grades 6-8
- Maintain a safe, healthy, supportive, and collaborative learning environment for students
- Work with the Education Specialist to ensure activities align and support the goals of the school the participants attend.
- Build positive relationships with youth and adults and serve as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication, behavior and community.
- Model and uphold all Agency and School policies and procedures
- Quickly identify and seek to resolve conflicts and behavioral problems in consultation with the Program Director.
- Interact with parents and keep open lines of communication to better understand and work with the youth.
Qualifications and Skills: - Bachelor's Degree in Education, Youth Development, or related field.
- Strong experience with curriculum planning for middle school students.
- Knowledge of youth development principles and theories.
- Knowledge of Common Core Standards.
- Experience coaching and training with strong leadership, conflict resolution and diplomacy skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and multitask in a fast-paced environment;
- Ability to plan and carry out assignments independently.
- Ability to prioritize, adhere to timelines and multi-task.
- Strong leadership, conflict-resolution and diplomacy skills;
- Must take part in 15 hours of professional development opportunities per year.
Additional Information: Schedules Available: School year: M-F 1:30pm-5:30pm.
Salary range is $30/hr-$35/hr.
